Pokemon: Obsidian Flames (Scarlet & Violet 3)

What is Obsidian Flames? – A brief on Scarlet & Violet 3

Obsidian Flames is the third official set in the Pokémon TCG’s Scarlet & Violet series, released on August 11, 2023. The set marks a milestone for both collectors and players with the introduction of Tera Pokémon ex — a new mechanic that gives Pokémon crystalline, type-changing effects. With over 333 cards, including 33+ secret rares, and a strong focus on Fire types and iconic chase cards like Charizard ex, Obsidian Flames quickly became one of the most sought-after modern Pokémon sets.

Whether you’re after sealed products, graded cards, or want to dive deeper into the Scarlet & Violet universe, here is a guide to choosing the right Obsidian Flames product. If you’re interested in the entire series, you can also explore our Scarlet & Violet booster boxe for a broader overview.

Different Obsidian Flames products – Which should you choose?

Obsidian Flames offers several product formats aimed at different kinds of collectors and players. Here’s an overview of the most popular options:

Booster Box: Contains 36 booster packs with 10 cards + 1 Basic Energy each. Perfect if you want to open many packs, chase cards like Charizard ex, or build decks from scratch. Often shipped with an acrylic case for extra protection.

Elite Trainer Box (ETB): Includes 9 booster packs, 45 Energy cards, a full-art Pikachu promo, damage dice, and a collector’s box. Ideal for both beginners and collectors who want a bit of everything — plus a nice display piece for your collection.

Booster Packs & Blisters: Single packs for those who want to try their luck or supplement their collection. See the full range of Pokémon booster packs for Obsidian Flames and similar sets.

Graded cards: For collectors focused on quality and authenticity, graded cards (often PSA 9/10) are the obvious choice. Charizard ex, Vespiquen ex and Artazon are among the most sought-after. Check our selection of graded cards to find the best specimens from Obsidian Flames.

Your choice depends on whether you prefer the excitement of opening sealed products or are specifically hunting for high-end graded cards in top condition.

Sealed products vs. graded cards from Obsidian Flames — Benefits

Sealed products like booster boxes and ETBs let you experience the full opening process and possibly pull one of the rare chase cards yourself. They’re especially popular with players who want to build decks and collectors who enjoy the thrill of unopened packs. At the same time, sealed products ensure the cards are untouched and potentially in mint condition.

Graded cards from Obsidian Flames — typically evaluated by PSA — are for those who want certainty about a card’s authenticity and condition. In particular, Charizard ex #228 (full art Tera ex), #223 and #215 (illustration/alt-art), Vespiquen ex #212 and Artazon #229 top many wish lists. Graded cards are perfect for display and long-term storage, as they are protected from wear and environmental effects.

Popular and chase cards in Obsidian Flames

Obsidian Flames is known as one of the most Charizard-heavy sets in recent years. The following cards are especially in focus among collectors and players:

Charizard ex #228 (full art Tera ex) – the ultimate chase card with crystalline effect and type-shift.

Charizard ex #223/#215 – illustration rares and alt-arts with unique artworks.

Vespiquen ex #212 – popular for both its artwork and playability.

Artazon #229 and Basic Fire Energy #230 – both sought-after secret rares featuring advanced printing techniques.

Additionally, Tera Pokémon ex variants and special illustration rares (SIR) with etched foil are among the most exciting pulls from booster boxes and ETBs.

These cards make Obsidian Flames a set that satisfies collectors seeking rarity and players looking for strong cards for metagame decks.

How to choose the right Obsidian Flames product

Your choice of Obsidian Flames product depends on whether you collect sealed products, want to open packs, or want to secure specific graded cards in top condition. Booster boxes and ETBs are perfect for those who want to experience the set’s full breadth and chase the big pulls. Single packs are ideal for small purchases or as a supplement to your collection. If you’re after quality and authenticity, graded cards from Obsidian Flames are the safe choice.

Obsidian Flames stands out from other Scarlet & Violet sets due to its Tera Pokémon ex mechanic, its strong Charizard focus, and a wide selection of secret rares and special illustration rares. Whether you’re new to the hobby or an experienced collector, this category has something for everyone — from the excitement of opening sealed products to the joy of owning a PSA 10 Charizard ex.
